Our Own Invention 2013

-Who are all of the band members? And what do they do in the band?

Devin DeLeon: We consist of Keito Sato (vocals) Devin DeLeon (guitar) Alex O'brien (bass) Justin Graham (drums) Noah Harris (temp. guitar)

-What's the origin of your band name, Our Own Invention? Have you changed the band's name before?

Keito Sato: Well at first our band name was And Then The Light Turned Green, later it changed to As If To Nothing, and finally Our Own Invention, we kept changing the name because out line up was changing and as for Our Own Invention we all agreed it had a catchyness to it and in a way kinda describes us as a band, we arent a band of any particular genre we are whatever type of music we want to play.

-What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

Devin DeLeon: If we had to label ourselves i would say we are a pop punk/hardcore band. Some of our major influences are In Her Own Words, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, A Day To Remember, Fall Out Boy, Rise Against, We Came As Romans, Woe, Is Me, and Of Mice & Men.

-How old were you when you started this band?

Justin Graham: When we started this band we were Juniors in high school, we were all 16 and 17 years old.

-How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Keito Sato: Devin and I met Justin in elementary school and we met Alex and Noah in middle school, so we have been long time friends.

-When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

Devin DeLeon: We formed in early 2011, and played our first show on Halloween 2011, which is when we considered ourselves a formal band, but I personally have always been fascinated by music and always wanted to play music, and I can also say the same for Keito, and one day we were together and decided to make a band and give it a shot. Soon, we found the other members of the band and since then we have been pursuing our dreams.

-Do you have a record label? If so, what is it?

Alex O'brien: We are currently unsigned

-What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever's available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?

Keito Sato: We mainly choose our instruments based on what we all personally feel is the most comfortable for us. We also try to find quality that comes with a lower price, we dont need the best of the best, just whatever gets the job done.

-Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Alex O'brien: We have played in many cities in our area ranging from Fullerton, Anaheim, and Los Angeles. To be honest a venue is a venue, if we can get booked to play a show we could care less where it is. We just love playing music for others. As for upcoming show we have a house show, and we are also playing a show in Long Beach at a music festival. You can look at more information about the show at rockpartylb.com

-Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list for your shows?

Justin Graham: We dont have any set play list for our show. We usually change it up a bit that way our shows dont feel stale and boring. However, we always play our two newest songs City Limits and Deception along with the last four tracks on our Nose Goes EP

-Who writes your songs? Is it a group effort?

Devin DeLeon: Keito usually writes a lot of the riffs and song ideas on guitar then as a band we get together and bring in our personal opinions to add to each section of the song and as for lyrics Keito and Myself write the lyrics.

-What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?

Keito Sato: Our songs are based off of personal experiences that we face throughout our lives. There really is no particular topic, they range from reaching our dreams to people doubting you to losing a friend.

-Could you briefly describe your music-making process?

Devin DeLeon: Well they usually start with off with writing lyrics of an even that we have experienced or feel is important to us, once we do that we create guitar riffs, then add bass and drums. After all that we run through the song and add any other dynamics to fit the song together and give some flow to the song.

-What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

Alex O'brien: Well since we are all in school and some of us work we try to fit in rehersal times whenever we are all free. However, there are usually three hour practices where we run our set for our upcoming shows and work on any other kinks that are sketchy at the time. IF we arent playing any shows soon then we reherse new material that we are always currently working on.

-How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

Justin Graham: Yes, at first our music was generally pretty simple, however we evolved as musicians and our music has gotten heavier, more technical and all around more well put together.

-What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Keito Sato: Our biggest problem is the conflict with school. It is hard to expand our fan base being locked down on a school schedule and another major challenge as a band is money issues. In our area money is an issue because some of us dont have jobs and everything is pretty expensive especially to rehearse. Since there have been many complaints of the noise we are forced to have to go to a studio to rehearse which really drains us finacially.

-What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?

Devin DeLeon: Our ultimate direction is not fame and fortune. All we want from this band is to become and outlet for people when they want to get away from their problems. We want them to be able to listen to us and forget about all the stress in their lives. All we want is to be able to sustain a living off of this band thats all we want. We dont need all the money in the world, just enough to get by and eat every night. We would rather sleep in a van or rv touring the world and putting on a show that our fans will never forget than play at madison square garden and owning a 3 million dollar house.

-What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Keito Sato: Dedication, dedication, dedication. If you want to start a band even for fun the only way you can get things done is if you put the band before anything, as long as youre having fun, otherwise it will just be a waste of time. If music is really what you want to do with your life you need to put everything youve got into it. Again, as long as you have fun and you’re dedicated.

-How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard your music before?

Justin Graham: To describe our band to someone who has never heard us before we would have to say that we are like a heavy Blink-182 mixed with A Day To Remember.

-How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?

Keito Sato: They can listen to our music at www.youtube.com/ourowninventionwww.facebook.com/ourowninvention and listen or download our ep atourowninvention.bandcamp.com

-Website links in which other people can find your music, or more information for your band?

Devin DeLeon: We have a twitter: www.twitter.com/ourowninvention we have a youtube account: www.youtube.com/ourowninvention facebook: www.facebook.com/ourowninvention and our band camp ourowninvention.bandcamp.com also feel free to talk to us, we try our best to stay connected with our fans, and if you want you can email us at ourowninvention@gmail.com

-Would you ever do an interview like this with us again?

Alex O'brien: We would love to do an interview like this!

-Would you like to do more fun/funny questions in another interview?

Devin DeLeon: Ask any and all questions!

-Any last words?

Keito Sato, Devin DeLeon, Alex O'brien, Justin Graham: We would just like to say thank you for the interview and say thank you for anyone who has supported us as a band or came out to any of our shows! It means the world to us that our fans the time our of their day to listen to our music over all the other great bands out there! So, thank you to everyone who has been there for us.
