Keeping Secret's Interview

Hey guys, here's our interview with Keeping Secrets, definitely a must read!

-Who are all of the band members? And what do they do in the band?

Cody Freiburger - Vocals
Nathan King - Bass/Vocals
Jordin Weeks - Guitar/Vocals
Lucas Liese - Guitar
Eric "Kansas" Liles - Drums

-What's the origin of your band name, Keeping Secrets? Have you changed the band's name before?

Nathan:  Well it's basically telling that no matter where you look everyone is keeping some sort of secret, it's very interesting to think about.  We've had this name ever since we started 8 years ago.

-What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

Cody:  It's tough to put a label on it just because I feel everyone's definition of genres usually end up to be more of an opinion instead.  If I had to say we get considered metalcore the most.  Our influences have changed throughout the years, but these days it's The Spice Girls, Brand New, Killswitch Engage, Every time I Die, The Amity Affliction and of course Garth Brooks etc.

-How old were you when you started this band?

Cody:  the four of us (Myself, Nathan, Jordin and Lucas) are the original members.  We were all 22 when we started.  Kansas joined over a year ago and the young buck is 22 right now.

-How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Cody:  Jordin and I grew up together and have known each other since 3rd grade.  We then met Lucas and Nathan in 2001 when Jordin and I moved to Boise for school.  Lucas lived there and Nathan moved there from Montana around the same time.  Kansas moved from Missouri to join the band here in Washington in 2011.

-When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

Jordin: We formed in march 2005, Music had always been a big part of each of our personal lives and we've all been in or involved with several other bands or projects.  We were all friends and were looking for the next great thing and it just kind of clicked...that and we all do it for the hot chicks! haha I kid, I kid!

-Do you have a record label? If so, what is it?

Cody:  We released our first full length on Torque/Victory Records in 2009.  Since then Torque has went under.  With that being said we are single and looking!

-What can you tell me about your instruments? (i.e., Are you subject to brand loyalty or will you play with whatever's available? What made you choose the instruments you have now? Was it cost or was it a style/model/brand/color preference?

Cody:  Vocally I have been partial T.C. Electronics.  They have done a great job with their effects and processing pedals.

Nathan:  My number one choice of bass guitars is the almighty Ernie Ball Stingray, however these days I play a bass that I essentially picked and pieced together.  Its got close to the e.b. sound I love, but it's got my own touch added to it.

Jordin:  I am cliche as they come i love Mesa Boogie, Marshall and Gibson.  I have played the same guitar since i was in 8th grade: 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom.  I chose that guitar because some rich yuppie sold it to me for $400.00 suck it nerds.

Lucas:  Jordin and I have similar gear in terms of The Mesa Boogie, through a Marshall 1960 Lead, but I use an ESP VB-II Eclipse.  Regardless, I'll play any guitar or setup as long as it has some full sound and is GENTLE on mi manos.  Suck Jordin's nerds......HA.

Kansas: I like to play zildjain cymbals. When it comes to drum sets, it really only depends on what sounds the best.  I ONLY use Promark 5A Nylon tip natural finish with DW 9000 double kick.  Go Chiefs!

-Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?

Everyone:  We have performed in most of the states in the western U.S.  Our favorite would have to be The Showbox Market in Seattle, WA, it's always a blast playing there.  I'd say as for our least favorite it's probably just any venue you show up to and feel unwelcome.  It doesn't matter how awesome the place may be, if you feel like a burden then it takes everything away and it's not fun anymore.  As for shows we have a bunch in february in Bremerton, WA, Portland, OR, Seattle, WA and Olympia, WA.

-Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list for your shows?

Cody:  We always have a set playlist of 6-7 songs depending on how long of a set we get.  We play just about every song off of our EP, "The Last Transmission" plus a new song.  We are looking to add 1-2 more new songs in the coming months since our newest album is almost done.  As of right now we don't play any covers, but it's always been something we have wanted to do, we just have to find the right song.

-Who writes your songs? Is it a group effort?

Jordin: The majority of our songs are written by cody and/or nathan They usually will record the main idea and show it to us. Luke, Kansas and I will add our input and there we have a song.

-What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?

Nathan:  We like to tell stories.  we try to stay away from the cliche song subjects, so we'll use a piece of inspiration to tell a story, whether it's something that has actually happened in our lives, or something that just inspires us.

-Could you briefly describe your music-making process?

Cody:  a lot of demo-ing haha we can sit there for hours and hours writing various parts.  It usually starts with a guitar riff and in my case a chorus.  The hardest part is taking all of those parts, putting them together, and making it flow.

-What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

Lucas:  We set our practice schedule based on each individuals work/school schedule so its subject to change but for the most part we practice three times a week.  Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 6-8.  When we have shows on Saturdays, often times we will have a quick jam before we load up the trailer to stretch out new strings and run a second check to ensure our gear is all good to go.  Nothing worse than a gear malfunction on stage although it is inevitable at times.

-How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

Cody:  We have developed a great chemistry with one another from touring and living together for so many years.  Chemistry in a band is something I strongly believe in and that fact that we have been through so much really builds that character.  We went through a huge change just over a year ago,  Nathan and I switched rolls in the band and we went away from screaming.  We still scream every once in a while, but as our music has gotten heavier we are now singing over %90.  I think that makes for a dynamic sound that isn't utilized very much today.

-What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Jordin:  I would have to say keeping a steady drummer…. we are on our fourth drummer and the dead time in between has been some of the most discouraging times we've had since we were unable to play shows, tour and fully practice.

-What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?

Jordin:  Our aim i would say, is for music to be our only job and not have to do anything else but play and tour.  Fame and money would be rad too;)

-What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Kansas: first figure out what kind of music y'all want to play and find people that would be dedicated. Make sure you get along with the group of guys/girls you start a band with. Just have fun and practice practice practice, but mostly just have fun and jam. Go big or go home : )

-How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard your music before?

Nathan:  metal/hardcore influenced music without the 'cookie monster' vocals is the best way I can describe it without you listening to it haha

-How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD?

Cody:  We do!  Our EP is streaming on our website, www.keepingsecretsmusic.com.  You can also find us on YouTube, we have a couple of music videos as well as a new one to come very soon!  If you really like it you can purchase a hard copy from us or buy it on itunes.  If you do that we will love you forever!

-I heard you're a Seattle based band, are you aware that Music Lately is in Washington State?

Cody:  No way!  Did we just become best friends?

-Would you ever be interested in doing a physical interview as it gets recorded and posted?

Lucas:  How physical we talkin here??  haha absolutely we would!

we are most active on Facebook, so if you wanna chat check us out at www.facebook.com/keepingsecretsmusic

-Would you ever do an interview like this with us again?

Cody:  Definitely, we love talking music with anybody!

-Would you like to do more fun/funny questions in another interview?

Cody:  That would be awesome, we are more of a humorous group of dudes as it is.
